What is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)?
EMDR is a type of psychotherapy that works on processing traumatic, disturbing or upsetting memories that are associated with problematic thoughts or beliefs you may hold about yourself now. The process involves use of rapid eye movement (bilateral stimulation) to connect stuck memories that may not have been processed to the wider memory network, therefore updating them with adaptive information you already know (it's a bit like connecting the dots between the two). There is a growing body of evidence to suggest this type of psychotherapy can be effective for many common mental health problems (not just PTSD) where traumatic or upsetting memories may be at the root. Such as, obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, eating disorders, anxiety, panic attacks, pain, phobias and much more.
